A well known local businessman, Robert John “Bob” Check, 81, of Prairie du Chien passed away Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Prairie Maison Care Center.
He was born Nov. 19, 1931 in Eastman, the son of John and Amelia (Berntgen) Check. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Janice Faye White on Nov. 17, 1954 who later preceded him in death on Feb. 20, 1999. Together they owned and operated Check’s Antiques in Prairie du Chien. Bob also worked as a foreman for Design Homes in Prairie du Chien for 26 years. He loved to fish and was known for his homemade soups.
He is survived by his daughters, Rene (David) Martin, Ronna (Mark) DuCharme and Ruth (Jim) Gates all of Prairie du Chien, Rose (Greg) Gillitzer of Eau Claire; his twin brother William (Wanda) and brother Jack (Pat) both of Prairie du Chien; his sisters, Helen Evert of Madison, Ester Hamann and Mildred (Leo) Zimmerman both of Prairie du Chien, Dorothy Zimmerman of Sauk City; brothers-in-law Jim (Joanne) White of Prairie du Chien, Jack (Gloria) White of New Mexico and Jay White of Delta Junction, Ark.; twenty-three grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren along with a special friend Delva Huntbach. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son Rick Check; grandsons, Brandon Michael Gillitzer and John Paul DuCharme and a sister Thelma Zimmer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, Sept. 13, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Prairie du Chien, Rev. James Weighner officiating with burial in the Brodtville Cemetery, Wyalusing Township. Military honors will be accorded by the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard. Friends may call on Thursday, Sept. 12, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
