Earl G. Whittle


Earl G. Whittle, 91, of Prairie du Chien and formerly of Elkader, passed away Thursday, August 29, 2013, at the Prairie Maison Care Center. He was born January 16, 1922 in Elkader, the son of Clem and Elsie (Kopp) Whittle.  

Earl served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He married Ruth Hamilton on October 14, 1950, at St. Rafael’s Cathedral in Dubuque, IA. She preceded him in death on their 60 year anniversary on October 14, 2010.  Together they farmed in the Elkader area for over 30 years before moving to Prairie du Chien in 1980.  

Earl enjoyed fishing on the Mississippi and was an avid gardener, especially tending his tomatoes. Recently, Earl was proud to have participated in the Freedom Flight.  

He is survived by his daughter Linda (Dennis) Meyers of Greensboro, NC; his brothers, Malcolm (Joann) Whittle of Elkader and Norbert (Dorothy) Whittle of Milwaukee, WI; a sister-in-law Bernice Whittle of Elkader; two grandchildren, Molly and Michele, along with six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a brother, Burnell, and a sister, Edith (Dale) Peck.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, September 3, 2013, at 11 a.m. at St. Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish in Prairie du Chien, WI, with the Rev. James Weighner officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Elkader, IA. Military Honors were accorded by the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard.  

Friends called on Monday, September 2, 2013, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien where there was a wake scripture at 7:30 p.m.
