Robert James “Jim” Duff


Robert James “Jim” Duff, 98, of Volga City, died Thursday, August 22, 2013, at the Elkader Care Center. Jim was born September 13, 1914, in Highland Township, rural Volga City, to Robert and Harriet (Goodwin) Duff. He received his education at the Duff Country School.

Jim was united in marriage to Lillian Christen on June 4, 1938, at Oelwein, IA. During his lifetime, Jim worked as a farmer, machinist, mechanic, salesman and contractor. He enjoyed reading, visiting with people and telling stories. Volga City lost a great historian!

Survivors include seven children: Sondra (John) Heying of Bella Vista, AR; James (Neala) Duff of Garnavillo; MacAlan (Kathleen) Duff of West Union; Robert J. (Iris) Duff of Marion; George (Ann) Duff of Livermore, CA; Marvin (Julie) Duff of Elkader; Thomas A. Duff of Volga City; 18 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lillian in 2002; sister, Jean (Charles) Hoskyn one brother, Kenneth Duff, and one infant sibling.

Funeral services were Wednesday, August 28, at 10:30 at Leonard Funeral Home with interment at Hillcrest Cemetery, Volga City. Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 27, at Leonard Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to VCTC for Volga City Opera House restoration.
