John LuVern Palas


John LuVern Palas, 59, of rural St. Olaf, died Thursday, August 15, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. He was born on July 18, 1954, in McGregor, to John and Elvera (Marmann) Palas. He graduated from Central High School, Elkader.

On June 19, 1976, he was united in marriage to Christine Heimann at Zion Lutheran Church in Clayton Center. Three children were born to this union.

John worked at Double L for 26 years as a welder. John was an avid hunter and fisherman. He had four of his own seasons–spring turkey hunting, summer fishing, fall deer hunting and Winter ice fishing. He loved gardening and having a few livestock on his acreage.

Survivors include his wife Chris Palas of rural St.Olaf; his children Jessie (Karl) Smitterburg of Cedar Rapids; Susan (Josh) Wiedner of Elkader; Matt Palas of Elkader; four grandchildren; his mother, Elvera Palas of Elkader; mother-in-law, Gretal Heimann of Elkader; sister, Mary (Mark) Ambrose of Mason City; brother-in-law, Norbert Heimann of Minneapolis, MN, sister-in-law, Barbara Heimann of Seattle, WA; one niece, Kali Ambrose of Austin, MN, and many friends.

John was preceded in death by his father, John H. Palas; father-in-law, Ted Heimann and a brother-in-law, Karl Hofmann.

A memorial service was held Monday, August 19, at 11 a.m. at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader, Inurnment will be a later date. Honorary casket bearers were Ron Palas, David Palas, Mark Palas, Brian Palas, Lee Palas and Rodney Mohning. Visitation was at the church from 9 a.m. to the time of service.
