Walter Hermsen


Walter “Walt” F. Hermsen, 82, of Prairie du Chien passed away Monday, Aug. 5, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. 

He was born Jan. 13, 1931 in Bloomington, the son of John and Clementine (Bohnenkamp) Hermsen. He married Eileen Crowley on November 5, 1952 at St. Gabriel’s Church in Prairie du Chien. He was a very active member of the Prairie du Chien business community as the owner and operator of the W.F. Hermsen Plumbing and Heating, Inc. as a master plumber. Walt was a lifelong member of St. Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus and served on the Southwest Tech Wisconsin Plumbing Apprentice Board from 1972 to 2004. 

He greatly enjoyed spending time outdoors and following his beloved sports teams, the Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Badgers and the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. He also enjoyed his fishing trips to Canada, working outdoors in his beloved rose garden, displaying his roses and was always ready and willing to share his rose growing advice to anyone who asked. Walt will always be remembered for his walks on St. Feriole Island with his favorite companions, Claire and Tori and how he started his day with his “coffee clutch” buddies.

He is survived by his wife Eileen; his children, Steven (Maureen) Hermsen of Hudson, Colleen (Doc) Dahl of Waunakee, Karen Solomon of Prairie du Chien, Patricia “Trish” (Mark) Sargent of Oconomowoc, Mary Catherine (Kate) Hermsen of Prairie du Chien; one sister-in-law Joanne Hermsen of Bloomington; his siblings James Hermsen, Arlene (Leonard) Schmidt of Bloomington, Marjorie Jaynes of Prairie du Chien, Joanne (Glenn) Ward of Onalaska, Marguerite (Roland) Clinton of McGregor, Iowa, Phillip (Jo Ann) Hermsen of Auburn, Ala. and Kathleen (Mike) Leard of Prairie du Chien, and Carolyn Bidwell, Las Vegas, Nev.; his grandchildren, Christopher Hermsen, Theresa Dahl, Matthew Hermsen, Alicia (Naughton) Hermsen, Christine Dahl, Kristin Sargent, Peter Solomon, Kelly Sargent, numerous nieces and nephews and one granddog, Claire.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Ambrose; one brother-in-law Raymond Jaynes and one granddog Tori.

A Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, Aug. 10, at 11 a.m. at St. Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Rev. James Weighner officiating with interment in the Calvary Cemetery both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call on Friday, Aug. 9, from 4 to 8 p.m. at St. Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish with a rosary being held at 3:45 p.m.
