LaVera Smith VanDuyn
LaVera Louise Smith VanDuyn, 87, of Littleport, Iowa, died on Sunday, August 4, 2013, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home. She was born on November 18, 1925, in rural Littleport, the daughter of Edward F. and Helena Wilhelmina Dorothea ”Minnie” (Nightingale) Hakert. LaVera was raised in the area and attended Littleport rural school. She was confirmed at Hope Lutheran Church in Littleport.
On May 6, 1945, LaVera was united in marriage to Verner K. Smith at Strawberry Point. Together they farmed near Mederville. LaVera was a homemaker and helped on the farm. Verner died in 1978. On January 11, 1987, LaVera married William VanDuyn at Littleport. William died in 1993.
LaVera was a lifetime member of Hope Lutheran Church. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking, hunting, and harvesting mushrooms. LaVera also was a baseball fan particularly of the Cubs and loved to attend school events of the grandkids. Other activities included volunteer librarian at Littleport and care center advocate. A particular joy to her were any activities involving her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her five children, Ilona (Allyn) Durey, Manchester; Lavera Cutchlow, McGregor; Danny (Lisa) Smith, Keosauqua; Lanny Smith, Sabula; and John Smith, Arlington; 19 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
LaVera was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Minnie Hakert; her two husbands, Verner Smith and William VanDuyn; four brothers, Marvin, Herman, Melvin, and Louis Hakert; and two sisters, Helen Peake Nading, and Wanda Berns.
Visitation will be Wednesday, August 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home, Edgewood, and from 9 a.m. to 11 at the church. Funeral services will be Thursday, August 8, at 11 a.m. at Edgewood Bible Church, Edgewood. Pastors Mike Jackson and Lin Reichstadter will officiate. Casket bearers are Danny Smith, Lanny Smith, John Smith and Allyn Duery. Honorary casket bearers are Dustin Smith, David Durey, Rohrk Cutchlow, Adam Metcalf Kyle Moore Andrew Boyle Brad Snowgren and Colin Lockhart. Interment will be at Family Cemetery near Mederville.
