Vada M. Schwantes, 92, of Glen Haven, passed away surrounded by her family on Monday, July 22, Orchard Manor Nursing Home, Lancaster.
She was born on October 3, 1920, the daughter of Lewis and Leta (Miles) Mayne. Vada graduated from Lancaster High School in 1938. On October 31, 1942, she was united in marriage to Roy C. Schwantes at the Methodist Parsonage in Lancaster. After their marriage, the couple farmed. She always raised a large vegetable and flower garden and was known for her green thumb when it came to growing African violets. Vada was a member of the Beetown United Methodist Church, Beetown Ladies Aide, Sew Sew Club, and longtime member of the West Grant Saddle Club.
Survivors include their children, James (Lauri) Schwantes, Ronald (Linda) Schwantes, Terry (Betty) Schwantes, Linda (David) Vesperman, William (Sarah) Schwantes, Larry (Lisa) Schwantes; fifteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Vada was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, in 2005; an infant son; her grandson, Ronald Paul Schwantes, Jr.; and a brother, Virgil Mayne.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 26, at 10:30 a.m. at Martin Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Lancaster with Pastor Mary Ann Floerke officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster. Family and friends may call on Thursday, July 25, from 5 until 8 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Lancaster and on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services.
