Sandbar trashed

garbage

This heap of trash was found littered on a sandbar just east of the Wisconsin bridge Saturday, July 20, along with an unattended burning fire. Rich Sheckler, Prairie du Chien, was camping on the sandbar and found the collection of garbage Sunday morning. He cleaned up and disposed of the items so other recreationists can continue to appreciate the beach. He said this is the third time this year that he’s found piles of garbage left behind by irresponsible river users in the area. According to Wisconsin DNR Supervisor Tyler Strelow, people are reminded to always “pack out what they pack in” and to “put fires out before you leave.” Littering fines range from $200 to $800, depending on how many gallons of garbage are left behind. He also noted that the DNR does investigate these types of cases by tracking items back to their owners. Anyone who witnesses a violation of these regulations is encouraged to contact the DNR’s anonymous tip-line at 800-TIP-WDNR. (Photo by Correne Martin)
