Life-long Prairie du Chien resident, Roy T. West, 88, died on Thursday, July 11, after suffering a stroke and fall at his home. He was fortunate to be served by Prairie Hospice at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.
Roy was born to Thomas (“Cappy”) West and Norma Ella (Marks) West on August 14, 1924. He enjoyed his grade school and high school classmates and remained friends with many throughout his life. Roy was a proud graduate of Prairie du Chien High School’s Class of 1942. He attended Madison Area Technical College and returned to Prairie du Chien to join his father’s business, West Plumbing and Heating. He became its owner in 1958. Roy remained active in the plumbing profession well into his retirement years.
Roy was a member of St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church and a 67 year member of the Prairie du Chien Masonic Lodge #8.
Roy enjoyed spending time with friends, writing and receiving mail, weekends at Avoca, playing cards, having a beer, tinkering in his shop, going for car rides and telling detailed stories about Prairie du Chien and its residents. He was an even-tempered, gentle soul.
Roy never married but was influential in the lives of his five godchildren, Ross Pinard, Katie (Pinard) Emerson, Dave Hammel, Rob Hammel and Mary Jo (Hammel) Tierney. He is also survived by a few high school classmates and many neighbors and friends whose kindness towards Roy is much appreciated. Rose and Jerry Wright were exceptional in their friendship with Roy.
Thanks to the clergy who prayed with Roy during his final days; Pastor Joe Irvin, Father Victor Feltes and Hospice Chaplain Pat Malanaphy.
Honoring Roy’s request, no funeral services will be held. Please honor him by extending a kindness to a neighbor.
Rest in peace, Roy. “Right on!”
