Blake’s Prairie Jr. Fair runs July 18-21
The 146th annual Blake’s Prairie Jr. Fair will kick off on Thursday, July 18 with the Texaco Country Music Showdown. The fair will provide a stage for some fine local vocalists to show off their singing talents and compete for a spot in the Showdown finals later this summer. Gates will open at 6 p.m. and the Texaco Showdown is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. There is no admission for Thursday’s show. This event is being sponsored by Peoples State Bank.
Earlier on Friday evening, the sheep and swine exhibitors will kick off the livestock judging at 6 p.m. at the sheep barn. The Hard Hits Promotions Demolition Derby is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. in front of the grandstand area. Friday closes with wrist wrestling immediately after the car demolition derby. Weigh-ins will be held just prior to the competition.
On Saturday, July 20, there will be livestock and exhibit judging starting at 9 a.m. Goat judging will begin at 10 a.m., followed by poultry judging at 10:30 a.m. Rabbit exhibitors will take the stage at noon. The fair will again host a meat animal buyer’s reception at the animal barns following the meat animal suction at 3 p.m. The truck demolition derby will be returning again this year, and is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. The combine demolition derby rounds out the day’s events at 7:30 p.m. For more information on the combine derby, or for early entry, call Chase Hullerman at (608) 732-6176 or Adam Guthrie at (608) 778-7080. Make sure to stick around until dark and keep your eyes on the skies, as a fireworks show will be held after the combine demolition derby, weather permitting.
The horse and pony judging will start the last day of the fair, on Sunday, July 21. All horse and pony exhibitors are to be on the grounds with their animals at 8:30 a.m., with judging starting at 9 a.m. At 9:30 a.m., the cat judging will take place near the general exhibit building.
The River Ridge FFA will again sponsor the chicken barbecue, which will take place on Sunday morning, serving from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Serving will take place at the fairgrounds again this year.
Starting at 11:45 a.m. will be this year’s parade. The old-fashioned children’s games will begin at 1 p.m., followed by the kid’s pedal tractor pull at 2 p.m. Senior citizens, make sure to have your pies baked for the senior citizen’s pie contest that will begin at 2 p.m. in the general exhibit building.
Sunday evening features the local tractor pull, which is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Weigh-ins will run from 12:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. on the fairgrounds. There will be an entry fee for each tractor entered, and cash prizes for the first five places in each weight class. Each class winner will also receive a trophy. The “ladies special” gives each woman placing first in her class additional prize money.
The teen dance will run from 8 p.m. until 11 p.m. at the general exhibit building.
This year’s Blake’s Prairie Jr. Fair will be featuring inflatables by Kid Again. Wrist bands will be for sale on the grounds. The West Grant Rescue Squad will have EMTs on the grounds during the fair who will be available to do free blood pressure checks.
