The Central girls’ softball team hit the road last week for two doubleheaders. On June 26 the team traveled to Garnavillo to take on the Clayton Ridge Eagles.  Game one saw the Warriors lose by a close 2-1 margin.  Paige Funk pitched and took the loss on the mound. She was 2-2 at the plate.  Ashley Nemechek was two-for-four and scored a run while Kinsey Juergens and Haley Schroeder each added a hit.

“We played a great game with no defensive errors against a good hitting Clayton Ridge team,” Coach Becky Lower said.

In the second game, Central lost with a score of 5-4. Kinsey Juergens was the starting pitcher and took the loss and Paige Funk provided relief in the 7th inning.  Ashley Nemechek had a hit and RBI. Kinsey Juergens, Haley Schroeder and Megan Nemechek each had a hit and scored a run apiece. Paige Funk had a hit and Darci Eberhardt scored a run.

June 28 found the girls in Troy Mills to face North Linn.  Central lost game one by a score of 5-1.  Paige Funk pitched and took the loss and was two-for-three at the plate. Megan Nemechek was one-for-two with an RBI and Haley Schroeder, Darci Eberhardt and Ashley Funk each added a hit.  Rachel Berg scored a run during the game.

“We had too many defensive errors and they capitalized on our errors,” Coach Lower said. “We continue to work on our hitting and need to bring confidence to the games.”

Game two saw the Warriors lose by a score of 5-2. Kinsey Juergens started and took the loss and Paige Funk provided relief on the mound. Paige Funk had a double and an RBI, and Kinsey Juergens, Laren Lenth and Megan Nemechek each had a hit. Darci Eberhardt and Rachel Berg each scored a run and Gabrielle Berns had an RBI.

“We were scheduled to play in the Decorah Tournament on June 29th but it was canceled due to rain and will not be rescheduled,” Coach Lower said. “We have a busy week with three doubleheaders scheduled on July 1, 3 and 5.”

“The girls have faced some tough competition and continue to grow as a team,” Coach Lower added. “The ultimate goal is to finish the season with some wins and hope the momentum will carry us through tournament play, which begins on Monday, July 8.”
