Various projects are scheduled in the city of Prairie du Chien this summer. One that is currently underway is the new shelter at Cecil Smith Park.

The Prairie du Chien Independent Little League is raising funds to contribute to the construction of the new multi-use shelter, which is a joint effort between the city and the Independent Little League.

Construction has begun and the concrete foundation has been completed. Also, water and sewer has been extended to the site.

“It’s a long overdue project,” said City Administrator Aaron Kramer.

The shelter will contain a new upgraded, compliant and centrally located restroom and a new concession stand with improved security and storage, while also providing better service for patrons, shade on sunny days and shelter during inclement weather.

Independent Little League President Matt Martin said that the league has an annual participation of approximately 250 children from grades K-8 and that the improved facilities will help them to continue to serve the youth of the Prairie du Chien area for many years to come.

Martin said that Mike Steiner is volunteering a lot of time and energy in helping to construct the new shelter and will oversee a group of volunteers from the Little League who will assist in that effort. Martin also said that Rickleff Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning is donating the plumbing work, Design Homes and Kohler Company are donating the plumbing fixtures such as toilets and sinks, and Blair Dillman is donating the concrete, siding and brick work.

The city is contributing up to $10,000 for the project, and Martin said that the goal of the Little League is to raise another $15,000.

He said that tax deductible donations can be in any amount and that several individuals and businesses have donated so far. Donors of $100, $250, $500, $1,000 and $2,500 or more will be listed on a recognition plaque that will be permanently displayed at the new shelter. Donations can be made at City Hall or by mailing to the following locations.
