On June 13th the team took on Valley in a doubleheader. Central took the first game, 4-1. Nemechek had a hit, a run and a RBI and Funk had a double and a run. Eberhardt finished with two RBIs and Berns and Kuehl each had a run.
The Warriors won the second game with a score of 2-1. Nemechek had a hit while Lenth had a hit, a run and a RBI. Funk had a hit and a run and Schroeder had a RBI during the game.
June 15th found the team in Dubuque to participate in an eight-team tournament sponsored by Dubuque Hempstead. Central played three games finishing in fourth place. In game one, the Warriors faced Dyersville Beckman and won 3-1. Paige Funk pitched a great game and got the win. Ashley Nemechek was three-for-four with an RBI and scored a run, and Haley Schroeder had a hit and a run. Paige Funk had a hit and a RBI, while Hannah Kuehl scored a run.
“This was a new tournament for us and it was a great experience to compete against some much larger teams,” Coach Becky Lower said. “The girls came into the weekend with good attitudes and some winning momentum.”
The Warriors tangled with Dubuque Hempstead in game two and lost 11-1. Paige Funk, Lexie Funk and Kinsey Juergens shared the pitching responsibilities.
“We threw all three to try and change things up with a good hitting team,” Coach Lower commented.
Ashley Nemechek was two-for-two and scored once and Lexie Funk had a hit and RBI. Laren Lenth and Haley Schroeder each added a hit.
“We had too many defensive errors against a great team,” Coach Lower said.
The team then played Cedar Falls and lost 3-0. Paige Funk was the pitcher and took the loss. Ashley Nemechek, Laren Lenth and Ashley Funk all had a hit in the game
“Cedar Falls had a great pitcher with more speed than we had previously faced, and that contributed to the lack of hits,” Coach Lower said. “We played solid defense, but didn’t start hitting until too late in the game.”
“We have another full week and a tournament this coming weekend in Decorah,” Coach Lower added. “I am very proud of the girls and their commitment to softball this season. They truly have the potential to finish strong and the work ethic to take them to the end. Hopefully this week will bring more wins and build their confidence.”
