Blair Allen Berens, 74, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, passed away at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City on Saturday, June 8, 2013, after a courageous battle.
Blair Berens was born May 18, 1939, at home in Wood Center, Iowa, the son of Edith (Bissell) and Paul Berens. He attended rural school and graduated from Edgewood High School in 1957. He was united in marriage to Janet Kathleen DeMoss on June 7, 1959, at the United Methodist Church in Strawberry Point. Three children were born to this union.
Blair was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was employed as a finish carpenter for Rechkemmer Construction in Oelwein for almost 23 years. In 1975 he entered law enforcement and worked part-time as a Police Officer at Strawberry Point and served on the Clayton County Sheriff’s Reserve department. In 1985 he became a Clayton County Deputy Sheriff and served until his retirement in May 2001.
Blair was a long-time member of United Methodist Church and a member of the Elkader Masonic Lodge. He served as Master Mason in 1984. Blair loved life and enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren and friends. He enjoyed hunting, archery, country music, woodworking and animals. He also enjoyed playing cards and going to the casino. Blair was a kidney transplant recipient on November 19, 2011, and was forever grateful for the extended gift of life. He was proud to pay it forward by also being a donor.
Blair is survived by his wife of 54 years, Janet; his children, Deb (Jon) Batchelder of Decorah, and Kathy (Chris) Bell of Ely; his grandchildren, Ryan Batchelder, Neila and Blair Bell; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Berens and Willamae Berens; six nephews, Bill, Bob, Stuart, Steve, Scott, and Mark Berens; two nieces Leslie Kelsey and Susan Swinford and their families; and his dog Layla.
Blair was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jeffrey Berens; his brothers, Robert (Max) and Dr. Burdette (Bud) Berens; and his nephew Bruce Berens.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Strawberry Point with Pastor Randy Moser officiating. Visitation was from 3 to 7p.m. on Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Strawberry Point, Iowa, with a 7 p.m. Masonic Service.
