S. Gerald Gilbertson

S. Gerald “Jerry” Gilbertson, 71, of Prairie du Chien passed away Saturday, June 8, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.  He was born August 6, 1941 in Whitehall, the son of Sidney and Esadora (Fredrickson) Gilbertson. Jerry was a tri-sport athlete in high school and went on to compete in football and basketball at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. He married Judith Larson on June 29, 1963 in Whitehall. Jerry was an active member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Prairie du Chien. He taught high school math in the Prairie du Chien School District for 33 years. Jerry was the Prairie du Chien track and field coach for over 20 years and also refereed for football, basketball, baseball and volleyball. He was the manager at the Prairie du Chien Public Swimming Pool in the early 1960’s. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and friends. 

He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Judy Gilbertson of Prairie du Chien; his son Jeffrey (Alice) of Prairie du Chien and his daughter Jill (Pete) Nichols of W. St. Paul, Minn.; grandchildren, Brandon Gilbertson and Claudia Nichols; step-grandchild Brittany Stovey along with a step-great grandchild, Lexton Stovey. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be Saturday, June 15, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Prairie du Chien, Rev. Joe Irvin officiating. A private family inurnment will be later in Whitehall. Friends may call on Friday, June 14, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday, June 15. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
